You have to write an essay on this.
For some students, these are the eight most dreaded words in the English language. They find writing essays a difficult and at times overwhelming task because they are not sufficiently secure in their understanding of formal essay structure and haven’t been given the tools to organise their thoughts and their writing.
Our Essay Writing Course aims to equip year 8, 9 and 10 students with the organisational and practical skills they need to be able to construct and write clear and coherent essays in response to a range of both fiction and non-fiction texts. Topics covered will include:
- how to read a text and take notes
- how to use textual evidence effectively
- how to construct clear and coherent introductions and conclusions
- how to organise a paragraph
As part of the course, students will have the opportunity to write their own essays and put the techniques they learn into action. These new skills are transferrable and can be put to use in other subject areas besides English, such as history and geography.
The course will comprise of three 2x hour workshops and is scheduled to take place before the beginning of the 2017 academic year to enable students to approach their forthcoming studies with greater confidence.
