Our phonics-based Pre-school Reading Programme is available for children in the two terms prior to their starting school. The programme is designed to develop children’s confidence so that they can get off to a flying start when they begin at school.
Our programme is based on the award-winning Reading Freedom Program, and we use phonics to develop children’s ability to identify individual sounds in words, and then to blend these into simple, meaningful words. The course focuses on interactivity and hands-on and fun, and phonics are used to develop reading and writing skills. The programme also establishes the foundations that enable pre-school children to become successful spellers.
The small classes (which have a maximum of four students) not only teach children the decoding skills needed to read confidently, but also gives them a positive attitude towards learning. Pre-school children become able to develop and understand:
- the sounds made by each vowel and consonant
- identifying beginning, middle and ending sounds in words
- alphabet knowledge
- rhyming words
- a short list of basic sight words
- blending sounds together to make simple words
- reading and writing letters
- reading short stories
Running throughout Terms 1 and 2 in 2019, this program is for children starting school in the second half of 2019. Parents are welcome to attend, and there are both morning and afternoon sessions available.
